Current Treatments Of Depression
Written by admin from on May 19th, 2008 | 0 CommentsDepression is a serious illness that is treatable. There are treatments that are currently used and some may be experimental. The treatments of today allow you to function whereas in the past anti-depressants in particular left you barely able to function.
Anti-depressants
Antidepressant of old were effective but had serious side effects often leaving the patient barely functioning and “out of it” until the dose wore off. Currently however, newer classes of anti-depressants are available that allow you to function at normal or near normal levels. A current example of a new class of anti-depressants is called SSNRIs- Selective Serotonin and Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors that works to increase the bioavailability of both Serotonin and Norepinephrine.
Psychotherapy
It is still a very current tool in treating Depression. Talk therapy or counseling as it is also called can help you to work out sleeping, eating, and other issues that might be affecting your depressive symptoms. It can help you to recognize negative thinking and how to change it. In mild cases of Depression Psychotherapy treatment may be all that’s necessary. For the most part though, it is usually prescribed in conjunction with other treatments such as anti-depressants.
TMS- Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation
This is a relatively new and still experimental procedure that is not yet approved by the FDA for treating Depression. It is done by a physician who has a magnetic coil that receives pulses of electric current. The magnetic coil is passed over the scalp and the electric pulses penetrate the bones of the skull to stimulate the nerve cells of the brain. Though this procedure is still considered experimental many hospitals and clinics offer it.
It has serious potential to become a very precise procedure able to treat other brain disorders.
Herbal Supplements
Herbal Supplements for Depression comes in capsule form. They are a blend of herbs, vitamins, minerals, and other nutritional substances that are known to positively affect mood. They are very effective in mild cases of Depression and in moderate cases of Depression. Enough is not known currently about the effectiveness of Herbal Supplements in serious cases of Depression. In order to get the safest, purest, most effective, and potent supplements they should have tested the ingredients at the molecular level to examine their metabolism. The interactions of the ingredients should also have been tested. In manufacturing they should have been made to pharmaceutical standards.
Conclusion
Current treatments of Depression include psychotherapy, medication, medical procedures and Herbal Supplements. All are effective treatments and are sometimes coupled with one or more other therapies. Before adding anything to your health regimen check with your physician.
